RAF B type Leather Flying helmet by Kay Canvas 

The Royal Air Force introduced the Type B Flying Helmet in 1936 and continued in production till 1941 until replaced by the C type. This is the classic Pilots helmet seen worn by Spitfire and Hurricane pilots during the Battle of Britain July to October 1940, and was worn by bomber crews in the early years.

Made of Dark Brown Leather with a chamois lining which has a layer of cotton padding in between, plus there's a suede strip on the forehead. The B type is fitted with a leather chinstrap fastened with a  friction type Bennett buckle fastening and a similar strap is fitted across the back of the neck to make a good fit and when undone it allows the helmet to be removed easier. The B Type helmet most obvious recognition feature are the 2 large zipped ear pieces which allow for Gosport receivers to be fitted, they are chamois lined with rubber pads to try and keep out noise out and the correct period brass zipper with leather tags on to fit the earpieces in.

Two brass press studs are fitted either side which correspond to the cloth bodied D Type oxygen mask and allowed this to be worn and removed quickly.
