The British Army's standard cap worn by most soldiers at the start of World War I in France and Flanders in 1914 was the Service Dress (SD) cap. However, this cap was found to be unsuitable once the soldiers started digging trenches, due to its rigid brim and wired crown. As a result, a soft trench cap was issued in early 1915, which could be easily stored in the pocket when not needed.
