A4 US Army green mechanics wool cap.

These are officially called "Cap, Mechanica, Winter, Type A-4".
The A-4 knitted cap was issued to the USAAF mechanics in WW2 and was often used by crew and US Airborne soldiers and also the 101st and 82nd Airborne in place of the Beanie.
