This Airtex KD Bush Jacket is a fine reproduction of the British Khaki Drill desert shirt / bush jacket, as worn by British and Commonwealth personnel in warm climate theatres during WWII. The breathable Airtex fabric makes it especially suitable for North Africa, Mediterranean, Italy, British Army, SAS, Commando or desert theatre impressions.
The garment can be worn in two ways: loose over trousers or shorts as a light bush jacket, or tucked into the waistband as a shirt. The lower pockets are made without buttons, allowing the jacket to sit more comfortably when worn tucked in. This makes it a practical and versatile uniform item for re-enactment, living history, film work or display.
This KD shirt/jacket was not only associated with male soldiers. Female personnel, including ATS women, were also seen wearing KD clothing in warm-weather theatres, often combined with KD trousers. This makes the item suitable for both British Army and women’s ATS tropical or desert impressions.
Historical Context
Khaki Drill, often shortened to KD, was the lightweight cotton uniform range used by British and Commonwealth forces in hot climates. In North Africa, the Mediterranean and later Italy, KD clothing was far more practical than heavier wool battledress. Airtex fabric offered added ventilation, a welcome advantage in desert heat, dusty camps and long days in the field.
The KD Bush Jacket became popular because it was more practical than some earlier KD Battle Dress styles. Shorter jackets could ride up during movement, while the longer Airtex pattern offered better comfort and flexibility. For this reason, this shirt/jacket remains a useful piece for British desert, Commando, SAS, ATS and Mediterranean theatre impressions.
