This B-3 Life Preserver is a custom made reproduction of the well-known aviation life preserver used before and during the Second World War. The vest is finished with a historically inspired appearance, with the front section fully aged to create a convincing period look for USAAF, RAF or Allied flight gear displays.
A special feature is the option to add your own inspection number to the vest. This gives the item a personal and historically credible finish, making it ideal for re-enactment, living history, museum displays, film productions or as an addition to a USAAF flight gear collection.
Historical Context
The B-3 life preserver was standardized in January 1936 and was used in military aviation as flotation equipment for aircrew operating over water. The original design consisted of two rubber bladders placed inside a yellow cotton canvas envelope. A leather reinforcement patch was fitted to the front to help protect the vest from wear caused by the parachute harness. The final production contracts for this type date from June 1942, after which later models gradually took over its role.
