Sweat rags have been used since Roman times to protect the Legionaries from the Armour rubbing on their necks. They have continued in use by soldiers of all nations throughout the ages either made by the Soldier or bought in a local market while on campaign.

The Sweat Rags were still on issue to British Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are large enough to use as a scarf to protect the neck from heat, rubbing of the uniform/ equipment on the neck or could be tied across the face for protection against wind or sand.
