Ask us your question

These Home Guard Ammo Pouches by Kay Canvas are reproduction webbing ammunition pouches inspired by the equipment used by the British Home Guard during the Second World War. The pouches are designed to carry .303 ammunition bandoliers and magazines, making them ideal for a Home Guard, Dad’s Army or British Home Front impression.

Early Home Guard units often relied on a mixture of standard military equipment, older gear and practical field solutions. That gives these pouches their own distinctive character: functional, sturdy and clearly different from standard 1937 basic pouches. For re-enactment, living history, film, theatre or museum display, they add a strong and recognizable Home Guard detail.

Subtle combination advice
For a complete Home Guard impression, these ammo pouches combine well with a 1937 webbing belt, Home Guard armband, British Battle Dress, Service Dress Cap, steel helmet, rifle sling and suitable Home Front insignia. Together they create a more convincing local defence impression rather than a standard infantry setup.

Historical Context

The British Home Guard was established in May 1940 as Britain’s last line of defence against a possible German invasion. It began as the Local Defence Volunteers and was largely made up of men who were too old, too young or in reserved occupations and therefore not available for regular front-line service.

Many Home Guard units were initially improvised and poorly equipped, but they played an important role in guarding bridges, factories, airfields, coastal areas and local defence points. This explains why Home Guard equipment could differ from standard British infantry webbing. Pouches like these fit that story perfectly: simple, practical and built around the needs of local defence.
