Historical Context
The British Home Guard was established in May 1940 as Britain’s last line of defence against a possible German invasion. It began as the Local Defence Volunteers and was largely made up of men who were too old, too young or in reserved occupations and therefore not available for regular front-line service.
Many Home Guard units were initially improvised and poorly equipped, but they played an important role in guarding bridges, factories, airfields, coastal areas and local defence points.
