The Parachutists 1942 Pattern Oversmock is an authentic reproduction of the jacket worn by British and Allied paratroopers during WWII. This oversmock was specifically designed to be worn over the battle dress and equipment during a parachute jump. Its purpose was to secure loose straps and gear to prevent them from snagging during descent.
Historische Context
The 1942 Pattern Parachutists Oversmock was developed after early jumps revealed the dangers of equipment catching during parachute landings. It became iconic through its use by the British 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions, notably during Operation Market Garden and the D-Day landings in Normandy. After landing, paratroopers often discarded the oversmock immediately, making original examples extremely rare today.
