Historical Context
Kelly Field near San Antonio, Texas, began operations in 1917 and became one of the earliest major centres of American military aviation. Throughout its history, the installation served as an airfield, flying school and centre for engineering, supply and technical support.
Its role changed considerably during WWII. The rapid expansion of American air power created a major demand for pilots, navigators, bombardiers, mechanics and technical personnel. In March 1943, Kelly and neighbouring Duncan Fields were consolidated under the name Kelly Field. Flying training ended and the installation’s principal mission became aircraft maintenance and supply.
Its workshops supported the American war effort by repairing and overhauling aircraft, engines and components. Kelly Field consequently developed into an important industrial and logistical centre within the U.S. Army Air Forces.
