This individual wooden pole section forms part of the modular tent-pole system in which several separate sections are pushed together to create one complete upright tent pole. Three pole sections are required to make one upright pole. A complete Pup Tent uses two assembled poles, requiring six sections in total.

Historical Context
The American Shelter Half, commonly known as the Pup Tent, provided soldiers with a simple and practical field shelter. Two shelter halves could be joined together and erected using upright poles, guy ropes and wooden tent pegs. The system allowed individual soldiers to carry separate components which could be combined in the field to create a two-man shelter.
Several versions of the Shelter Half and its associated equipment appeared during its service life. With the later OD#7 configuration, separate green-painted pole sections were used which pushed together to form the upright tent poles. Three sections create one complete upright pole.
For this reason, this item is described as original U.S. Army surplus rather than automatically being advertised as an original WWII-dated component when no individual wartime date can be verified.
