This Royal Ulster Rifles Airborne BD Badge Set is a characterful insignia set for anyone building a correct British airlanding / glider-borne impression on a Battle Dress (BD) uniform. Based on the photographed set, it includes two curved ROYAL ULSTER RIFLES shoulder titles, two Pegasus formation signs, two AIRBORNE tabs, and one oval glider badge. Together they give a battledress blouse the unmistakable appearance of a British airborne soldier.

This set is especially suitable for a portrayal of the 1st Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles, a glider infantry unit of the 6th Airlanding Brigade, 6th Airborne Division. Soldier of Fortune describes this type of set as the badges worn by British glider troops on their Battle Dress in the UK and on active operations. The battalion landed in Normandy by glider on 6 June 1944 and later continued fighting in North West Europe.

What makes this badge set especially appealing is its strong connection to Operation Varsity. On 24 March 1945, the 6th Airborne Division took part in the airborne assault across the Rhine, the final major Allied airborne operation in Europe. The 1st Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles was assigned a bridge objective near Hamminkeln and the River Issel, making this set ideal not only for a Normandy impression, but also for a convincing late-war Rhine Crossing / Varsity portrayal.

Subtle historical advice
For a convincing Royal Ulster Rifles airlanding impression, this set works best with a British Battle Dress blouse, a proper 6th Airborne layout, and glider-borne field equipment. For a true Varsity interpretation, it pairs especially well with a late-war impression centred on Hamminkeln, the Issel bridges, and the Rhine crossing campaign.

Historische Context
The 1st Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles was converted during the war into an airlanding battalion and from May 1943 served within the 6th Airlanding Brigade of the 6th Airborne Division. The battalion landed in Normandy by glider on the evening of 6 June 1944 near Ranville, later fought on in North West Europe, and was subsequently deployed again during the Ardennes fighting.

Spotlight: Operation Varsity
Operation Varsity was the airborne component of the Rhine crossing and is described by the Airborne Assault Museum as the largest single-day airborne operation in history. On 24 March 1945, more than 16,000 Allied airborne troops were inserted into western Germany, including around 8,000 men of the British 6th Airborne Division. British objectives included Hamminkeln, the Diersfordt Wood, and the crossings over the River Issel.

For the 1st Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles, Varsity was a true glider-borne assault. The battalion was assigned to LZ ‘U’ south of Hamminkeln, with orders to seize a major bridge over the Issel and the surrounding area. ParaData states that their six gliders landed on both sides of the target bridge and captured it immediately. By early in the day, the key Issel crossings and Hamminkeln had already fallen into Allied hands. This is precisely why this badge set carries such a strong late-war British airborne identity.
