The Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company in Buffalo, New York, is an important site in early American aviation history, especially during and after World War I.
In the 1940s another factory was built, Plant #2, in Cheektowaga near Buffalo. This plant was very important during World War II and made, among other things, the P-40B, the aircraft used by the Flying Tigers in China.
Glenn H. Curtiss began his business in Hammondsport, New York, but moved to Buffalo in 1916 because of the increasing demand for military aircraft during World War I. In Buffalo, he built a huge factory on Elmwood Avenue, which was completed in 1917. At the time, this was the largest aircraft factory in the world, employing as many as 18,000 people. Thousands of JN-4 "Jenny" planes were made here, which were very important for pilot training in the U.S. and Canada. About 95% of all Allied pilots in the war learned to fly in a "Jenny."
Even after the war, the Buffalo plant remained important and became a center for new developments in aviation. In 1929, the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company merged with Wright Aeronautical to form the Curtiss-Wright Corporation, one of the largest aviation companies in the US.
In the 1940s, another plant was built in Cheektowaga, near Buffalo, known as Plant #2.
