The 381st Bomb Group, part of the 8th Air Force, operated its Boeing B-17s or Flying Fortresses from June 1943 to April 1945 from Ridgewell Airfield in the rural county of Essex, northeast of London. Prior to the arrival of the Americans, the airport was home to No. 90 Squadron RAF. The 381st Bomb Group had Triumphant We Fly as its motto and consisted of the 532nd, 533rd, 534th and 535th Bomb Squadrons. Their bombers were marked with the letter L placed in a triangle. The group carried out a total of 296 missions, mostly daylight strategic bombing raids on targets on the European continent. Many aircraft and crew – mostly young guys – fell prey to enemy fighters and anti-aircraft guns. Some lost their lives, others were taken prisoner of war, a few were able to return with the help of local resistance fighters. The many great and minor sacrifices made by the men of the 381st Bomb Group, while far from home and from their loved ones, contributed one by one to the fall of the Nazi regime.
We owe our freedom to them. Heroes all!
