Historical Context

Hill Field was named in December 1939 in honour of Major Ployer Peter Hill, a United States Army Air Corps test pilot. Hill died in 1935 while testing the experimental Boeing Model 299, the aircraft that became the prototype of the famous B-17 Flying Fortress. The official groundbreaking ceremony for Hill Field took place on 12 January 1940.

During WWII, Hill Field served as an important aircraft maintenance, repair and supply centre. Aircraft supported there included the A-26, B-17, B-24, B-29, P-40, P-47 and P-61. Wartime employment peaked at more than 22,000 military and civilian personnel in 1943, with thousands of aircraft repaired and returned to operational service.

Following the establishment of the independent United States Air Force, Hill Field was officially renamed Hill Air Force Base on 5 February 1948.
