Historical Context
The M1943 uniform was introduced in 1943, but paratroopers from divisions such as the 82nd and 101st Airborne soon had their trousers modified by unit riggers. The standard M43 trousers did not provide enough storage for airborne operations. Large canvas pockets were therefore added to the thighs to carry ammunition, maps, and other field gear. Leg ties ensured the trousers stayed secure during parachute jumps. These modifications made the M43 paratrooper trousers one of the most iconic garments of WWII airborne history.
