Avenger Field, originally opened in August 1941 as a United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) military flight school, was converted into a training center for Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) in February 1943. These women were trained to pilot and execute military aircraft such as transporting aircraft, testing new aircraft and conducting transport flights. A total of 1,074 WASP pilots were trained at Avenger Field.
