Starting in February 1942, Miami Beach was transformed into one of the largest military training centers in the US. The city made almost all of its hotels and apartments available for the training of soldiers and officers. In all, more than 300 hotels and apartments were used for housing and training facilities.
The Miami Beach Training Center was an important center for basic training and officer training. Nearly a quarter of all USAAF officers and a fifth of all men were trained here.
In addition, Miami Beach was the headquarters of the 26th Antisubmarine Wing, which was responsible for conducting anti-submarine patrols in the Atlantic Ocean.
