Pyote Army Air Field, located in the desert of West Texas near the town of Pyote, was an important training base for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. The field was constructed in 1942 and quickly earned the nickname "Rattlesnake Bomber Base" because of the many rattlesnakes found during construction.
Pyote was originally used to train crews of B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. In January 1943, the 19th Bombardment Group, the first unit to bomb Japanese targets, arrived at Pyote directly from the Pacific to train new crews. Later, the base was also used to train B-29 Superfortress crews.
At its peak in October 1944, more than 6,500 military and civilian personnel were stationed at the base, making it one of the largest bomber bases in the US.
