The 8th Air Force was one of the United States' major air forces during World War II and played a crucial role in the air war over Europe.
Founding and Mission.
Formation: Jan. 28, 1942 in Savannah, Georgia.
Active in Europe: From May 1942, with headquarters eventually established in High Wycombe, England.
Nickname: "The Mighty Eighth"
