This WADE Vehicle Flag is a reproduction of the well-known American vehicle card used on vehicles going ashore during the Normandy landings. The card was attached visibly in or near the vehicle window and indicated that the vehicle had been prepared for “wading” through shallow seawater during the landing.
The front shows an American flag with fields for vehicle, inspector, date and time. The reverse features the text “Just Before You Wade!” together with a practical checklist for waterproofing and checking the vehicle. This includes points such as ignition, carburettor, battery, vents, oil level and instructions for what to do after clearing the beach.

Historical Context
During the preparations for D-Day, many Allied vehicles had to be made ready to drive from landing craft through shallow seawater onto the beaches. This process was known as “wading”. Vehicles received temporary waterproofing, with vulnerable electrical parts, openings and fittings sealed or checked to prevent failure caused by salt water.
The WADE Vehicle Flag or Wade Card was a small but practical part of this preparation. It was not merely decorative, but a functional reminder for drivers, mechanics and inspectors. In the rush of embarkation and landing, such a card helped bring a little order to a world of engine noise, seawater and urgent commands.
