The 322 (Dutch) Squadron RAF is the oldest operational squadron of the Dutch Royal Air Force. It was founded on 12 June 1943 and was the first squadron of the RAF to consist entirely of Dutch soldiers. Prince Bernhard received his first flying lesson in Hatfield on September 23, 1940 in a Tiger Moth. The prince received his license on 9 May 1941. He subsequently became the main motivation behind the establishment of the Dutch Squadron within the RAF. A proposal for its creation was submitted to the British Ministry of Aviation in March 1942. No 167 (Gold Coast) Squadron RAF became the squadron's "nursery". From July 1942 Dutch pilots were trained and Dutch personnel became available. After the Air Ministry gave permission for a Dutch squadron, 167 Sqn moved to Woodvale Airbase on 12 June 1943, was disbanded and became 322 Dutch Squadron RAF. It then counted 25 pilots, of which 8 were Dutch. In the period after that, many England sailors were included in the squadron.
