Bring the distinctive appearance of a 1940s British RAF station to your display with this Royal Air Force Ensign. The air force blue field features the Union Flag in the canton and the recognisable red, white and blue RAF roundel in the fly.
This historically inspired reproduction is printed on cotton, giving the flag a softer and more period-appropriate appearance than many modern polyester flags. Its slightly muted colour scheme makes it particularly suitable for displays representing the Royal Air Force during WW2.
The flag is printed on both sides and finished with an approximately 4 cm wide white reinforced heading. A lanyard loop and cord allow the Ensign to be attached easily to a flagpole, wall or historical display.
An atmospheric display piece for re-enactment, living-history events, museum presentations, RAF collections and historically themed interiors.
Please note: this is a newly manufactured reproduction and not an original 1940–1945 period flag.
Combine this RAF Ensign with our RAF uniforms, headwear, insignia and equipment to create a complete historical display.
Historical Context
The Royal Air Force was formed on 1 April 1918 through the merger of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. This created an independent British air service with its own organisation, identity and traditions.
The introduction of a dedicated RAF Ensign was announced in 1920, and its design was formally authorised on 24 March 1921. The flag could subsequently be flown at established RAF stations, normally from the station flagstaff.
During WW2, the Ensign became a familiar identifying symbol at British RAF stations and military airfields. Its air force blue field, Union Flag and RAF roundel directly connected the flag with the Royal Air Force and its aircraft.
