HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Selfridge Field was established near Mount Clemens, Michigan, in 1917. The first military flight from the field took place on 8 July 1917. It was named after First Lieutenant Thomas E. Selfridge, an American aviation pioneer who was killed during a demonstration flight with Orville Wright in 1908. Selfridge became the first member of the United States military to die in an aircraft accident.

During WWII, Selfridge Field served as an important training centre for pilots, ground crews and maintenance personnel. Units associated with the renowned Tuskegee Airmen were also stationed and trained at Selfridge. Today, the base remains one of the oldest continuously operating military airfields in the United States.

The U.S. Army Air Corps wording used in the design reflects the pre-war and early military aviation heritage from which the U.S. Army Air Forces developed in 1941.
