Historical context EN

Waco Army Air Field opened on 5 May 1942, northeast of Waco, Texas. The airfield initially operated as a basic pilot-training school for American military aviators. In February 1945, it became headquarters of the Army Air Forces Central Instructors’ School, which trained flying instructors for the extensive American wartime training programme.

The official military designation was Waco Army Air Field. The wording Waco Flying Field on the shirt follows the shorter graphic style commonly associated with period athletic clothing and souvenir designs. The base should not be confused with nearby Blackland Army Air Field, which was temporarily known as Waco Army Air Field No. 2.
