Historical Context
The Women’s Land Army played an important role on the British Home Front during the Second World War. With many men serving in the armed forces, thousands of women took over essential agricultural work. Known as Land Girls, they helped with ploughing, harvesting, milking, tractor work and other demanding farm duties. Uniform items such as the green WLA tie helped create a recognisable identity for this civilian wartime service. The Women’s Land Army was re-established in 1939 and continued until 1950, with over 200,000 women serving during that period.
