Well-made metal Distinctive Unit Insignia representing the US Army 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, which served with the 101st Airborne Division during WWII. This colourful regimental crest is based on the historic 501st PIR emblem and features the famous name GERONIMO on the lower scroll.
The circular design displays a white parachute against a blue background. Beneath the canopy is a stylised Native American profile, together with a hand holding a red spear or lightning bolt. The red, white and blue enamel colours give the badge its distinctive Airborne appearance.
The insignia is manufactured as a single-piece metal badge with coloured enamel detailing. Measuring approximately 31 mm in height, it makes a compact but highly recognisable finishing detail for a 501st PIR uniform presentation.
Suitable for reenactment, living history, mannequin displays, film and theatre costumes and militaria collections. The supplier describes this model as being manufactured in the correct WWII colours and period-style pattern.

Historical context
The 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment was activated at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, on 15 November 1942. Before the Normandy invasion, the regiment was attached to the 101st Airborne Division. During WWII it participated in the airborne landings in Normandy, Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, the fighting around Bastogne and the subsequent advance into Germany.
The name Geronimo became closely associated with the early traditions of American military parachuting. The famous exclamation was adopted as a battle cry by early US paratroopers and became part of the identity and insignia associated with the 501st PIR.
This metal enamel badge is based on the emblem traditionally connected with the regiment. Its combination of the parachute canopy, profile and Geronimo inscription makes it one of the most recognisable designs in the history of American airborne forces.
